The new Wydown Middle School will be the first school the Clayton School district has built from the ground up in 40 years. Our team met with all the stakeholders early on in the planning phase to aid the process: administration, faculty, community, the City and, importantly, the kids. From the outset, the top priority was to create “the best learning environment for our children.” In the final design, every classroom and gathering space has a connection to the outside. Teaching and communal areas can be re-configured to adapt to the needs of students. Thoughtfully designed open environments support everything from independent learning to spontaneous performances. Without compromising the needs of the kids, the design is responsive to the neighborhood. The building is situated for the best street profile. Underground parking beneath a 60,000 square foot playing field will minimize runoff as well as visual pollution. Construction is taking place now and will continue over the next two years.
